A poem written in 2020 when we could not breathe due to COVID, Protests, and climate fires everywhere throughout the western USA.

Take a knee

Take a knee, America, to honor our fallen
Take a knee, and bend it
Beg forgiveness, of ourselves, our institutions, our planet
Take a knee and spill your tears
Take a knee in rage of injustice

Take a knee closer to the hard pavement
where breath stops, blood flows, lungs fill, and protests blaze

Take a knee for our bloodied Earth, flowing fire
Take a knee for police justice
Take a knee for COVID justice
Take a knee for climate justice
When one life is taken for another, Take a knee

Take a knee, and pray for peace, take a knee, and take a breath,
inhale the sweet breath life breathes into you

Take a knee, and set your child upon it: Tell your truth
