The Pandemic comes to Paradise
My husband and I lived in Kona, Hawaii, when it was on its way.
Long before there was masking, social distancing, or a declared pandemic, we heard about Wuhan, China, and wet markets. We knew a pandemic was coming. It’s a lot like the Cascadia seismic event. It’s a matter, always, of when not if.
Given all of that, we were friends with a guy who drove himself to the emergency room late one night. He died in the parking lot. We think although no pandemic had yet been declared — it was early in 2020 — he died with respiratory symptoms that likely were due to COVID-19.
We knew his mother better than we knew him, and we had not visited in many months, although we often visited his closest friend — at a safe distance.
Once the pandemic was in full swing, it was horrible, worldwide. We heard about sorrows beyond Hawaii. We do have more than coconut radios, after all. But, there, no one stays indoors with germs unless they’re confined. It’s wide open, with fresh, clean breezes. The weather is fine except down on the over-heated coastline. No lockdowns, unless you…
