Long for a new lawn

Lawns are stupid. Costly. Wasteful. Absurd. Life draining. Fossil fuel loving.

I rail against lawns to anyone who will listen, but we moved to a suburban neighborhood where the lawn is already there, so lawncare! We don’t expect to keep the house long, and conformity is so contagious, I even find myself wondering if my tiny truck is big enough.

Today for example, it needs mowing. But if I stuck to my principals, I would not cave to the HOA rules, and the subtle looks of neighbors.

I have always dreamed of a meadow. All kinds of beautiful wild flowers and small shrubs. All kinds of birds and bees and visiting bunnies and deer. But there are grass roots under there stronger than steel cables. Who has time?

Our departing neighbor, with tremendous pride and glee, knocked on our new door. “I brought gifts!”

Beside the entry walk was parked a lawnmower. I have a lawnmower now.
