A story for Human Parts

What we got

We were given, the legend goes, the Garden of Eden. Then we developed agriculture. Or, fell from grace. Historical accounts differ.

Only twelve thousand years ago — give or take — -people began to spread the seeds of food acquisition. Literally, and in technology of commerce and education, the new age of “grow your own” spread far and wide.

A few bossy types, noticing this, realized the great value of stored food. We can use it, they realized to start villages, then towns, then great cities — maybe with powerful standing armies. “These cities are going to need Kings!” They said, loudly, to no one in particular, since few people were alarmed at the unforeseen implications. A few more bossy types, (also, Know-it-alls) said, “The people in these cities are going to need gods, religion, rules. Maybe a good measure of guilt and remorse!”

“Whatever,” said the people, and went on with their leisurely afternoon, listening to the serene murmur of the river, watching the beautiful birds, or making love.
