Greedy Hummingbird At The Feeder

They are little flitting jewels, but what are they really up to?

A satirical look at deaf and dumb birds just trying to be birds

The hummingbird at the feeder is scaring away the cat
He sounds like a little copter. Or, she flits like a little bat

Their beaks are sharp little weapons, really, flying blades
terrorizing little flyers that stab, and suck, on mass raids

While raccoons raid the compost, the fountain amuses the crows
the sugary feeder of draining nectar keeps us on our toes

It has to be replaced often, there is such high demand
Sugar is more addictive than heroin, but somehow it isn’t banned?

So we go and buy the sugar, and fill the tiny red flowers
And then you buzz like kamikazes, pestering us for hours

And, another thing, you never sing at all! You never, ever sing
It makes me wonder why we even feed you anything

Hummingbird at the feeder, maybe you are deaf
If you do not hear the whine, you don’t feel out of breath

Hummingbird at the feeder, you throb, and trill, and hum
You don’t seem to know the words at all, you must be kinda dumb
