It is in our human psychology to hope there is a chance to survive. It is what will make a mother cover her baby in an eruption, or fire. She knows to live is unlikely, but we will try to protect even so.

Also, with 8 billion there are a lot of chances of life

(more so than other organisms) assuming we don't totally kill our biosphere.

Die, yes. But die fighting.
