Most people have a confirmation bias that tells them (as you mentioned) that their hard work and determination helps them avoid poverty. Most do not reflect upon using up Earth's resources more than their share. For example, living in a gated community while others have no shelter or security. We also do not reflect on how much waste we generate as we consume, which is perpetuated by being under constant pressure to buy, buy, buy.

This is only solved through compassion--you said it--but also knowledge about ourselves and our motives. Thanks for your article.
