Experience is the best teacher

My cat lived most of his fourteen years in Kona. He never knew frozen water. He never tasted a single snowflake. He never found it too cold to sleep outside. He never cried to come in a closed door. He never dreamed of a world where it is so cold that his staff of people put on extra layers of fake fur and paw coverings.

True cold was simply beyond his life experience.

He lives here in the PNW, now. He knows a warming world is ‘nonsense.’

He knows I am a scientist, an ecologist, and a psychologist. That just proves to him that human beings are pretty dumb.

I often write that when people open their senses, they will swelter in the heat, shiver at the cold snaps, seek higher ground in floods, smell the smoke, taste their own bitter tears, miss the dying wildlife, hear the cries of hunger, and…
