Nature is non biased. If you want a non-nuetral god, go for monotheism. Therefore, there is no paradox in nature's cruelty or kindness, it is a subjective view.

As to ethics, it's more helpful for people to consider suffering. For example, many plants evolved to be eaten by animals to spread their genetic material. We must accept that to live organisms endure some suffering. That said, as highly conscious creatures, we must consider what needless suffering we inflict, for example deforestation to ranch more cattle for beef, and the exintction of speices who suffer anihilation there, destroys some aspect of all diversity and biosphere. More suffering for all beings.

We must look at what hurts the least, what is taking one's fair share, and what causes the most suffering. Ethics.
