Our belief that we are not heading for catastrophic global heating and biodiversity loss is dangerous. We must come to believe that we, are in fact, powerful, influential, and determined.

Even if this is only partly true--a "false" belief-- it is in the interest of our human psychology (comfort, as you say,) to believe in our empowerment and potential equality.
