This week, Ron DeSantis is being investigated for relocating migrants from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard. He was appealing to his GOP MAGA base for political points. The stunt may have backfired.

Yet, Maybe it said exactly what he intended. Maybe, some in the MAGA verse are not only okay with a reaction of horror and disgust but they are also empowered. There is a psychological advantage in doing things so outrageous, that the point of the offender is to display how much he can get away with, and how strongly supporters may concur.

There are tons of examples in history where even when a leader did or said something they did not even think is honest, they say it to provoke a response in their supporters to rally for it.

Examples include things like asserting it’s okay to be disrespectful to people of color, or feminists, or LGBTQ+ people. Cruel humor is one way. To say anything along the lines of “I just say that to tick them off,”…
