Tangerines At Christmas Are Messy Miracles
An abundance that we take for granted
From Christyl Rivers’ V USOB, Very Strong Unpopular Opinions Blog
Orange ya glad?
We grow tangerines. We grow lot of other type of citrus, too, but the tangerines are the most prolific.
They are messy. They are coping with more rain and warmer temperatures. They are hard to peel, and this year, have a lot of seeds.
I hate waste. It’s the only sin we really should look harder at.
We try to give away all the fruit we can, but others also have a lot of fruit this year, primarily avocadoes and bananas. I see a lot of coffee beans dying on the branches.
We waste so much food. It’s set up that way. With all the ships disgorging food from all over the world, primarily the west coast and Latin America, people don’t eat what we have, we eat what we buy.
This is some kind of insanity. Yet, I too, am guilty.
Even trying to avoid packaging, especially plastic, it’s all but impossible to live and eat responsibly.
It will take a vast overthrow of our entitlement values. I can’t wait to see what happens as supply chains, pandemics, storms, prices, and shortages peel the thin skin off of our present system.
Meanwhile, have you ever smelled a tangerine taken directly off the tree? It is heaven. One we routinely ignore.
I wish I could give you all our extra, it’s mostly going to become compost and insect food.
