The James Webb Will Explore New Worlds
I Want To Know What Spiritual People Believe
Very Unpopular Strong Opinions Blog
Evolution is awesome, how does anyone doubt it?
Creation, as I understand it, is the ongoing process of evolution that is far beyond astonishing.
Yet, sometimes I see and hear programs about those who doubt evolution is actually happening. In fact, my own sister-in-law once said, “It’s a lie!” And, I was so startled, I fell silent and dumbfounded as a trilobite.
From humble beginnings of marine mud, then bacteria, we came. Yet we also came from the grandeur of the stars. It all ties together. I fear that those who can’t feel it, miss out on crucial aspects of our belonging.
The spirituality of those who claim God, but don’t feel the awesome attraction of life among our oh-so-many stars is confounding to me.
How can one be spiritual, and yet, not feel the incredible pull of life on Earth?!?! How rare it is, how diverse: “Endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful…” are being evolved.
JWST, The “Jay Dub” telescope
Cross your fingers. This week we launch the James Webb Space Telescope. What it will reveal will change our world. One hopes, (beyond hope, maybe?) that we will finally see ourselves united as one planet, floating and fragile, interconnected, and blessed with life.
The infrared telescope looks as if it was inspired by bees. Bees who buzz life into being. Bees golden with sun. Bees so busy and industrious they accumulated their technology, sweetness, beauty, and light into one huge, massive undertaking.
We are all kin! What in the universe can be more sacred than that??
But, although inspired by bees and their blessings, the telescope is being created by people; our most gifted, dedicated, and determined people.
The vastness of the universe, and the chemical signatures of life will become clear as the Jay Dub collects light and billions of years of the past into observable snapshots.
Let’s all hope we learn something. With such knowledge there is no reason we can’t begin to understand how precious life is, and how protective of our rare biosphere of life we all need to be.
