Team Depp? Team Heard? The important thing about your tribe is that you belong and feel included

Very Unpopular Strong Opinions Blog by Christyl Rivers

It took me a while to realize why I feel so disgusted about the defamation trial outcome (Depp won) of these two dysfunctional people.

Here it is: when every single story we read asks us to choose sides, we lose the side that really matters: team humanity.

Humanity, while being distracted by celebrity and unsportsmanlike animosity, is facing gigantic problems.

The reason we are is entitlement. A sense of “my team first.”

There is no bigger problem than othering. We see othering in racism, sexism, classism, and nationalism. We know our team is the best and the others can just die horrible deaths so we can gloat.

In the words of Depp in a text to Heard, we just drown, burn, and then, to feel gleeful and triumphant, “rape the corpse.”

Earth is becoming a drowned, burned, corpse.

Maybe it will feel momentarily victorious to be on the winning team?

We have to look on the bright side, I suppose.
