Roaring Rivers

Torrents, currents, and ripples by Christyl Rivers, Ph.D.

I just realized (lol?) that I am a “Rivers” and we’ll compare the differences between rhyming poetry, and free verse — and how it flows.

Everyone has their preference as to which speaks the most in writing and reading poetry. It’s always held a fascination with me, that this is the case.

I am crazy for both.

Some people hate poetry. Some love simple rhymes. Some love reading anything else.

First, the free-verse poem of our Mountain river trip:

Blazing River

Snow, Sun, and assignment ordain the day
Beneath the cliff, among rumbling river rivulets
We sought rocks to cement into a hearth
Clamoring up the rugged bluff heavily laden

We felt slipping soil pull us down
We tasted the wind’s bending
We ached with the weight of homesick stones
We could smell the fragrant trees protest with love
We understood gravity’s begging drag
We heard coarse cries of coursing water
