Exploding with life

As often mentioned in this blog, I have the rare privilege of living in a live volcanic region. I previously lived also, on the Big Island of Hawaii and extensively reported on how that blew apart in Pahoa.

It helps an awful lot to keep in mind that death and destruction are the more dusky (and sometimes dusty) side to flowing lava, lahars, life and creation.

It is both humbling and instructive to watch how nature just does nature while we bumble on trying to manage life with our absurd stories about progress and capitalism. Our petty squabbles, and tiny attention span.

I was much the mountaineer in my younger days, climbed most of the Cascades, Rockies, and of course, Hawaiian volcanoes.

I was in better shape then. We hike less. Now I just sit by a fantastic glacial erratic, pull weeds, plant flowers and food, and wonder how much life will survive the coming fires and storms ahead.
