What On Earth Is Real?

Are you living on your device, or in the real world?

Very Unpopular Strong Opinions Blog by Christyl Rivers

Business demanded travel. Again, it was excruciating.

It’s overcrowded, cramped, body damaging, and psyche killing. Covid has limited the number of flights, so they fill the only two available until they are overstuffed like sad ticks about to explode.

But what really felt strange was a conversation I had with someone about the nature of reality.

No one is here

Every person aboard was on a personal device of some kind, and more or less not noticing that we were hanging in the sky, flashing across an ocean, crushed together inside a cold, steel tube. Below us, the Pacific ocean teemed with life, sound, fury, survival struggles, and of course, making life on earth both possible and “real.”

Will the baby whale in the photo be here in 100 years? Here is why I don’t know.

A lady asked what kind of phone I had.

She commented that being linked by our invisible electronic connections is the new “reality.”

I maintained, that life on Earth today is disconnected from reality.
