Whereas it is true that banks suck the life blood out of you, they are middle men and paper pushers. They do no actual person to person real work. On other hand, A land lord, or a land lady (me) has to do extreme toil and real work, plumbing, construction, wall repair, putting in electrical, removing piles of garbage, cleaning, cleaning, cleaning, and some cleaning.

Although some landlords are "the bank" many are just individual families with none of the legal power to force squatters into paying their rent. And paying for the damage that a bad one can do is all left up to the owner who inherited, and did not even ask, to be a manager. A corporate entity holding managment is VERY different, and powerful, compared to a regular working family.
